I want to express my condolences to Joe\'s family. Joe was such a fine man--cultured, educated, thoughtful. I grew up next door to the Conaways and through them came to know about his achievements and character. I remember when I saw him at his home he was always cordial and smiling as he greeted me by name. I used to see Joe in the Augusta library researching or writing when I would go over to the library in high school and that serious side I will also remember.
My father John Twombly, who died last month at the age of 85, used to talk to Joe about his time serving in India in World War II. My mother played the cello in a trio with Rosa Harris and also in the orchestra.

Dear Rosa, Lynne and Stuart,
Joe Harris was the epitome of grace, kindness and justice. From his perch on the connecting breezeway at Mead Hall, he commanded the respect of all on the playground.
He was an everwatchful eye from which no one was hidden.
No less so in the classroom and office. He had an everwatchful heart from which no one was excluded.
"Blessed are they who die in the Lord," says the Spirit. Blessed indeed.
Thanks be to God for the gift of Mr. Harris.

Joseph H. Harris ideally was more influential in my formative years than most other male roles models during 1969-1975. While attending Mead Hall, even now I recall memories that are crystal clear in their lesson. During a visit to Aiken 7 years ago I was able to meet with him on 2 occasions. I said to him then and I\'ll say it now that his memory will be with me as long as I live. I truly admired him as a child sometimes feared him when sitting in the principal\'s office and wished I had been older to truly appreciate what a brilliant man he was to all who encountered his good nature. Mrs. Rachal was my 2nd grade teacher. To Rosa, Lynne, and family I, like you, will miss him dearly. He was my Captain Kangaroo.

Conversations with Mr. Harris, even brief ones on the street,
were educations in themselves. He was certainly one of the most important influences in my life.

Dear Rosa, Lynne and Stuart,
God has another angel, but thankfully he shared him with us a long time.
Joe exemplified all that I ever needed for a standard. He was my mentor, my children\'s mentor and my Mother\'s mentor. He was always there with quiet advice and loving application.
My family and I will miss him. Know that you are in our hearts and prayeers.

Our deepest sympathy is offered during this time. Joe is remembered by us as the head of Mead hall where our two sons Brent and Stephen were students. He was a wonderful leader there with all the children.
He was a survivor of much heart trouble and I can feel for that because we went through it at the same time!
May God bless you.

Dear Rosa,
When our 3 children were educated at Mead Hall under Mr. Harris as Headmaster, and you as a teacher,we felt that they were in a safe, caring, spiritual environment. Then as I taught under him, I knew what a truly wonderful man he was. He was so genteel, kind and sweet, a loving, learned Southern gentleman. He will be missed but not forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
With love and sympathy,
Mary and Craig Musick
