Woody was a grand friend. He and I met at a party - not a surprise. He had a genius for showing up unexpectedly in a wide variety of circumstances. He was a musketeer always interested in further adventures. What I re member most about him was his enthusiasm - his enthusiasm for everything. Whether it was driving up to Saratoga on a moment’s notice or playing court tennis, he was permanently excited about everything he was about to do, and had a way of including you in his many adventures. A true Wildman, like most of us he settled down to become a permanently excited about what he was about to do geologist. He found a love for Louisiana, which does not surprise me, as it is a very rich and different world. Although it has been a long time since we last met, I miss him already. If it were not for him, I would never have gotten involved in horse racing, which was itself another rich and different world, something that remains a part of me to this day, and an experience that I would not have given up for the world.

Life with Woody was an adventure and a journey. I would describe him as a combination of Monty Python meets Prep School at a horse race. He was lively, with a jovial and energetic spirit, experiencing the ‘Joie De Vie’ (Joy of Life).
I first met Woody when he was a graduate student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He was enthralled with the culture of Louisiana, describing it as a ‘whole other world’. He liked visiting Blue Moon Saloon and spending time with friends. We worked on his thesis project (soil hydrogeology) together, while he was in pursuit of his master’s degree (M.S. Geology) which he earned from UL Lafayette in 2005. After graduation, Woody started on his career in the environmental field. We were married that year amongst family and friends and then relocated to New Jersey for work, and later to Maryland where we made our final home. We adopted twin cats, Yota and Kluso, who were dearly loved and always amusing.
Woody cherished all of his friends, and loved his family. He spoke proudly of his parents and their legacy; his Dad was inducted into Racing Hall of Fame and his Mother was a riding instructor for Jacqueline Bouvier, as a young woman before marrying John F. Kennedy. He told me stories of growing up in Long Island, sibling rivalry, and family dinners with London Broil and Yorkshire pudding on the menu. We ventured down memory lane in Long Island, NY to his old neighborhoods, and stomping grounds up to Saratoga. Pictures of family and friends were kept in our home so they felt ever-present. He admired and respected his sister, Sheila, and cousins, Sharon, Kevin, and Chip in Warrenton, VA at Dog Patch Farm.
I remember how passionate he was as a horseman and that he loved to reminisce about his riding days, his many encounters and life as a rider and a trainer, silly antics with horses (being bitten on the shoulder by a famous horse), as well as the accidents he suffered through. He told me once that because he became so intimately familiar with the ground after his falls, he decided to go ahead and study it (and that was his reason for studying geology)! He was an accomplished field geologist, who appreciated and loved his work.
Woody endeavored to create his own path and he certainly did that. He leaves an indelible memory from his remarkable life, and I was blessed to have experienced his journey. Rest in peace.
Always,
“Bunkie” (Danna)

Woody and I were classmates at Southwestern Military Academy. We caught up a couple of years ago thanks to his sister. Great times at Santa Anita with he and his dad while we were in school. A man of many talents and cherish our reconnecting after so many years apart. Watched the Belmont today and discovered his passing. My deepest sympathy to all his family as we all journey towards that final ride.

Woody was a “horse of a different color” full of energy (and some light hearted mischief) from early childhood . I remember the fun times at my mothers house every Thanksgiving when all the cousins got together for a big family dinner , touch football and dancing in the hall after dinner.
I didn’t realize all of his amazing accomplishments until I read the obit. He’ll be missed by family and friends alike but now reunited with those family members who predeceased him. We love you Woody . RIP
Sadly , condolences are sent from Your cousins from the LaRocque side of the family - cousins Evan , Linda, Buzzy and Gary.

Whether going over a fence, putting a ball away on a real tennis court or doubling an opponent at the backgammon table, Woody was a competitor. His zest for life was contagious. He played hard and partied just as hard. I remember being terrified sitting in the passenger seat of his car ! To say that he lived on the edge is an understatement. He had so many friends and loved nothing more than getting them together for fun and games. His madcap exploits are the stuff of legend. So many people will miss this extraordinary man. R.I.P. Q: How would you describe James to someone who had never met them?
A: When I remember Woody, I will always see him for the horseman and sportsman he was. In this day and age of the vanishing of true gentleman, I think Woody upheld the wonderful characteristics of an old school gentleman, horseman. Like his father and so many other horsemen before him, he was always well dressed in natty tweeds, had beautiful manners, he was charming and he was well versed in all things. I delighted in meeting all his steeplechase friends and in all the commonality we shared in the horse world with both our fathers, who too were close friends.
Woody was a risk taker, fearless, always walking the edge. He demonstrated this time and again in the many races he rode in and in his life overall. He had joie de vivre for life, his delight for simply living and he lived his life to the fullest. He was a great friend to many and he had friends from all walks of life. His friendships were strong, long and steady and they ran deep. He was a great communicator and stayed in touch with so many. People wanted to be around him because he was always game for a good time. He was an adventurer and a lover of good music; He had a keen interest in the workings of the world and in the make of up of the earth. He was a deep thinker and a questioner of the mysteries of life. I remember that he was a great racquets man as well. I can remember many well fought squash games against him at Piping Rock club. He would also boast about his great court tennis matches and the exclusive clubs he played at around the world. He shared this sport with my father and brother. I will never forget the fun games of tennis at our childhood home in Jericho. He dedicated himself to sports throughout his entire life and built a long and impressive list of accomplishments for sports. I am grateful for knowing him for the last 48 years. He was a good friend to me and to all my siblings. We were blessed, all of us to have such a solid and strong friend group growing up in Long Island. The bond for all of us has forever remained strong.
To sum him up I will quote an article written about my grandfather, as it applies to James Woodruff Maloney Jr as well. “William Hazard was known for loving the horse the hound, the pony, the ball and the mallet but best of all he loved the blue skies and the open fields. “There is one form of subtle beauty which is often times overlooked. It is something that is not acquired easily. It takes years and few people achieve it, far fewer than those who achieve an outward beauty, physical beauty. This is the beauty of being a Gentleman. It is something that is in a way inexplicable.”
