Mary Veronica O'Hare Smith, a loving wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother, and dedicated nurse, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 4th, 2024, at the age of 91 at Anchor Post Acute Care following an illness.
Born on December 29th, 1932, in Syosset, New York, Mary was the daughter of the late Hugh & Katherine MacAleer O'Hare.
After completing nursing school, Mary served with honor as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Nursing Corp, dedicating herself to caring for service members. Following her military service, she continued her vocation at DeKalb Medical Center, where she worked tirelessly as a registered nurse, touching countless lives with her healing hands and kind spirit.
Mary is survived by her husband, John Jospeh Smith, Sr. in addition, she is survived by her four loving sons: John Joseph (Jill) Smith, Jr. of Alpharetta, GA; Thomas J. Smith of Nashville, TN; Michael J. (Camie) Smith of Gainesville, GA; and Kevin H. (Erin) Smith of Anaheim, CA. She found great joy in her role as a grandmother to her five grandchildren: Andrew, Daniel, Alison, Emily, and Michael Smith, each of whom brought a special light to her life.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at 2:00pm at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, 125 Park Ave SE, Aiken, SC 29801 with the Very Rev. Richard Wilson as celebrant.
Final rites and commendations will follow in the Columbarium of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, 138 Fairfield St SE, Aiken, SC 29801.
Her legacy will be carried on through her family and in the hearts of all those she touched throughout her life. In remembrance of Mary, the family asks that donations be made to St. Mary Help of Christian Catholic Church, honoring her deep faith and commitment to her community.
