AIKEN, SC – Mrs. Mary Margaret Jenkins Smith, 90, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2024 at Barclay House of Aiken, South Carolina.
Mary Margaret was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, the only daughter of the late Robert N. and Margaret Leonard Jenkins. She was a graduate of Fairmont Senior High School and West Virginia University where she was an active member of Delta Gamma Sorority. Upon graduation with a degree in Elementary Education, she married the love of her life, Jack H. Smith, who graduated from West Virginia University School of Pharmacy. They were happily married 60 years until his death in April 2016. She loved working with children and taught kindergarten and first grade in Fairmont, West Virginia for 25 years. Mary Margaret was a member of the Junior League of Fairmont, Delta Kappa Gamma Education Honorary, and PEO. She enjoyed gardening, collecting antiques, reading, and spoiling her grandchildren and great granddaughters. Mary Margaret was a Deacon and an Elder at the First United Presbyterian Church in Fairmont, West Virginia and at South Aiken Presbyterian Church in Aiken, South Carolina.
Mary Margaret is survived by her daughters, Suzanne Smith-Fox (Timothy) of Charleston, South Carolina and Margaret Ellen Smith Hamman (Gary) of Aiken, South Carolina; grandchildren, Robert Timothy Fox (Laura) of Kingsville, Maryland, Brenton Andrew Fox (Sarah) of Charleston, South Carolina, Abigail Smith Hamman Campbell (Brian) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Elizabeth Anne Hamman of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, and 2 great granddaughters, Charlotte Ann Fox and Grace Amelia Fox of Kingsville, Maryland.
Memorial services for Mary Margaret Jenkins Smith will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, October 21, 2024, at South Aiken Presbyterian Church.
Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to South Aiken Presbyterian Church, 1711 Whiskey Road, Aiken, South Carolina, 29803 and to Metavivor Research and Support 908 King Street, Suite 320 Alexandria, Virginia 22314.
